Just like committing to a law school program, choosing a legal position is equally important. The legal field is known to be competitive, yet the job market is full of incredibly diverse opportunities. From a wellness perspective, finding the right role is crucial to sustaining long-term balance and success. Accepting a new position should be an exciting journey, but sometimes the decision-making process can weigh heavily.
Recently, Brittany Mayes, Wellness Program Manager for the University of Oklahoma College of Law, presented at the IWIL Annual Conference. Brittany used her own experience working with her therapy dog, Ellie, to showcase the positive influence on law students’ well-being.
Therapy animals are different than an accredited service animal, or emotional support companion, and have their own unique set of skills and responsibilities. Brittany shared that therapy dogs do not have to be perfect, but they should find a role that is perfect for them. With many lawyers struggling to maintain perfectionism, this concept resonated deeply. In addition to the direct benefit of enhancing overall wellness, we can learn a lot about how a therapy dog finds the right role for their skills and temperament. Below is a list of considerations taken from Brittany’s presentation on therapy dogs, reflected through the perspective of legal professionals.
Choosing the Right Role – Considerations for both Therapy Dogs & Legal Professionals
Basic Needs and Benefits: Prioritizing overall wellness, beyond general safety.
-
- Consider what factors within the role may cause dysregulation or overstimulation.
Boundaries and Expectations: Communicating responsibilities with respect.
-
- Consider how the role will be accomplished and how expectations will be met.
Engagement and Fulfillment: Understanding purpose for a rewarding experience.
-
- Consider how the role aligns with core values and how to define the overall worth of the role.
Therapy dogs ultimately model the importance of advocating for your basic needs, maintaining respectful boundaries, and prioritizing self-care to find role satisfaction.

One Final Consideration
One final consideration on the topic of therapy animals in the legal profession comes from the NewYork State Bar Association’s Animals in the Law Committee. At NYSBA’s annual meeting, puppies were available for adoption, and to offer a way for attendees to de-stress in between conference sessions. In addition to promoting a local rescue shelter, this event was co-sponsored by the Committee on Attorney Well-Being, recognizing that animals provide comfort, companionship, and many more wellness benefits.
