Well-Being Week Daily Schedule
FRIDAY: May 10, 2024
Feel Well
Emotional Well-Being
Valuing emotions. Developing an ability to identify and manage emotions for health, to achieve goals, and to inform decisions. Seeking help for mental health when needed.
Focus On What You’re Doing
One of the simplest prescriptions for greater happiness is this: Think about what you’re doing. We’re happiest (and less depressed) when we’re mentally present while engaging in the world. The particular way we spend our day (e.g., partying vs. a quiet night at home) matters much less than whether our thoughts match our actions.
The simplicity of this advice doesn’t make it easy. The human mind likes to wander: Almost half of our thoughts each day aren’t related to what we’re doing. And “a wandering mind is an unhappy mind” (Castro, Scientific America, 2010).
Working to improve control of our attention (especially when we’re stressed, when our wandering thoughts tend to turn negative) can aid our mental health.
Aim for more daily experiences of feeling fully absorbed in what you’re doing. We have only a limited amount of attention and can invest it in ways that either enrich our lives or make us unwell.
For more information, see this Scientific America article summarizing the mind wandering research and an academic journal article about its association with depression
Mental Health Self Check-In
Do a mental health check-in with yourself. Start by taking a brief mental health self-assessment. Use a mental health checklist to evaluate any areas of risk for you and make a plan to take action. A few resources are provided below:
- Mental Health America Mental Health Tests
- New York State Bar Association Personal Wellness Assessment
- If you are in crisis or need immediate help, please call the Crisis Life Line at 988. You can also reach out to your local lawyer assistance program.
- More self-assessments and resources are available in IWIL’s Mental Health Resources Guide.
Change Your Scenery
Explore new things and add variety to your daily routine, which can positively impact mood, well-being, and creative thinking. For example, try small changes of scenery, like a new coffee shop or lunch-time restaurant, taking your laptop outside for an hour, or working in a fresh location for a day.
Here’s a short article titled A Change of Scenery Can Boost Your Well-being and Mood.
Live Webinar
Friday, May 10, 30–60-minute sessions, 11:00 am ET-2 pm ET
Share Your Well-Being-Boosting Passion
How legal professionals invest their non-work time and energy can have a big impact on their mental health and work engagement. But many feel so busy and tired from work, that their non-work activities dwindle. The aim of this program is to provide inspiration and resources to try out new, well-being-boosting activities outside work. Session leaders will:
-
- Share activities they do to disconnect from work, revitalize their energy, stave off burnout, and feed their soul.
- Explain how they fit their passion into their busy lives and give suggestions to others for doing so.
- Provide tips and resources.

SESSION DESCRIPTIONS
SESSION #1: MUSIC
Speakers: Kendra Brodin, Jessica Moore, Denise A. Robinson
Three music lovers will share how they infuse music into their lives in ways that enrich their well-being: (1) singing, playing instruments, taking lessons, teaching, and jamming with others (Jessica); (2) serving as a guest musician and organist for a faith community (Kendra); and (3) mindfully listening to music to regulate emotions and to connect with her cultural identity (Denise). You’ll get to absorb different types of music as the session leaders share and demonstrate their music passion and share ideas and resources to bring music into your life more actively and in different ways.
SESSION #2: WRITING
Speaker: Kelli Dunaway
Kelli will share her passion for novel writing, how she fits it into her busy life, and tips and tools she has learned during her journey developing as an author. She also will talk about her journaling practice and facilitate a brief writing activity.
SESSION #3: COOKING
Speaker: Drew Collins
Drew’s passion for cooking will inspire even the most inexperienced cooks to create more joy in the kitchen. Drew, who wasn’t always a cook, will share his own development of a cooking passion and how it boosts his well-being. He’ll explore reasons why people don’t cook—even though they might want to—and discuss tools and tricks to eliminate (or at least alleviate) some of those barricades to the kitchen. You’ll leave feeling “hungry,” ready to tie on aprons, and inspired get cooking!
SESSION #4: TRAVEL/VACATION
Speakers: Matt Potempa, Chahira Solh, Luis Pineda (Moderator)
Two busy law firm leaders, Chahira and Matt, will share their passion for vacations and travel, ingredients that make up their best experiences, and how they regularly fit it into their lives. Moderator Luis Pineda, who studies positive tourism, will spotlight elements that science says will support the well-being effects of taking time off. They also will discuss tips and tools and steps before, during, and after your trip to squeeze the most well-being boosting power out of it.
SESSION #5: KNITTING
Speakers: Cheryl Solomon, Jessie Spressart
Cheryl and Jessie are passionate about knitting and inspiring others to learn how. They will guide you toward beginner projects, give tips and tools for getting started, and discuss how easy it is to fit knitting into your life. A demonstration will be included, so bring your yarn and knitting needles.
SESSION #6: ART JOURNALING
Speaker: Koriambanya (Kori) Carew
Among the many ways that Kori expresses her passion for art is through art journaling. Art journaling is a visual diary on loose paper or in a bound journal where you focus on the process of creating and of self-expression rather than a particular end result. In this session, Kori will discuss what Art Journaling is and the various forms and formats it can take and will invite you to practice together. The goal is for you to feel empowered to try something on your own that incorporates your interests and talents. For the list of things to bring to the session to participate in the project, see the Session Materials.
SESSION #7: PHOTO WALKS
Speaker: Noah Bradow
Noah will share how he found his way to photowalking, what it is, and the benefits he experiences—such as silencing the inner chatter and rumination triggered by daily stressors and mindfully connecting with the present moment. He’ll also discuss practical tips for you to get started on your own photowalks. Please have a phone (with a camera) handy, because the session will include a hands-on session of mindfully selecting a photo in your immediate surroundings. You can see some of Noah’s images on instragram @bradowno.
